Bachata originated in the Dominican Republic as a social partnered dance involving lead and follow roles. From the 1960s onwards it became popular in the West and evolved, drawing on a wide variety of dance styles and moves to create an improvised dance incorporating traditional, ballroom and sensual moves in response to the music.
At Frome Bachata we believe that we shouldn’t be hemmed in by gender stereotypes… anyone can lead and anyone can follow. Everyone dances differently and every dance is a few special moments shared between two people.
In social dancing it is usual to rotate partners but this isn’t compulsory.
