About the artist
Jenny focuses on multi-layered one-off screen printed paintings. Colour, mark-making, freedom of expression and experimentation are central to her work. What interests her most is how abstract work can convey personal meaning and evoke particular memories and reactions
‘A lot of the influences in the work shown here I now see as emerging from my visits to rural Brazil where I have family. I managed to spend a couple of months there a year ago, just before restrictions made things even harder.’
‘I was surrounded by zingy tropical vegetation and vibrant colours, especially when the brilliant sunlight shined above my head. Vast skies with extraordinary clouds and dramatic storms all seeped into my consciousness and reminded me I was in very different territory to home in the gentle Wiltshire landscape.’
‘With my work I often use a mesh screen to make the paintings , pushing the pigment through with a squeegee to create smooth areas of colour, then adding drawn, painted or stencilled elements. Each layer needs to dry before adding more, which gives me thinking time as to what’s needed next. I love the whole process as it’s hard to predict exactly how the next layer will change things, so it’s often a fine line between chance and control. This pushes things in new and sometimes unexpected directions which is important to me – I want to surprise myself!’
