We Feed The World

‘We Feed The World. A celebration of smallholder farmers and fishing communities’.

Smallholder farmers grow 70 per cent of the world’s food on less than a quarter of the planet’s agricultural land. Traditional fishing communities provide over 50 per cent of all the fish we eat. Their intimate knowledge and sense of responsibility towards the land and waters of the planet enable them to protect, regenerate and sustain ecosystems while providing the food we need. Yet the communities constantly find their livelihoods threatened by the industrialised agricultural and commercial fisheries that undermine the biological diversity on which we all depend.

Over three years, The Gaia Foundation invited forty-six renowned photographers to document the working lives of smallholder farmers and fishing communities in six continents. From Stefan Ruiz in the heart of the Colombian Amazon and Katrin Koenning in the Australian outback to Jo Ratcliffe in the dry lands of Zimbabwe and Tanya Habjouqa in the landlocked West Bank; from Hannah Reyes Morales in the tropical Philippines and Rankin in East London to the Senegalese artist Victor Omar Diop in Kenya and the legendary Graciela Iturbide in her Mexican homeland. Their poignant and intimate portraits tell us stories of resilience, community, nutrition, agroecology, women’s empowerment, and the critical role of seed and food sovereignty in navigating the climate emergency. They are also and expression of grassroots resistance to the forces that continue to exploit our living planet.

This timely and important book gives voice to the people that really feed the world.
